Industries are large hub or a backbone for many since ideas are transformedinto a reality only here. Industrial machine is one of the primary resources ofany industry so that they can produce products and deliver to its customers.

Inevery industry shaping, slotting and planning tasks are performed. Work item isprocessed on different types of machines to get a desirable product. Work itemmay range in small, medium, big, light and heavy category; kind of machinerequired does not only depend upon the kind of of but also the movability of awork item. Cutting, shedding and shaping and finishing are the major tasks.

Shaper Machine

A shaper machine is machine tool that uses linear relative motion in its cutting action on the work piece. Cutting takes place during forwarding stroke of ram and backwards stroke comes back idle, only restores the position of ram.

Workson the ‘Quick Return’ mechanism

Ifyou need more depth in cutting? Move the tool downwards toward work piece willgive you desired results.

Itis utilized inside the small industries and for light duty work. It is a lightmachine. Due to its less rigid and less robust approach, it has more accuracyon the machined surface.

Slotter Machine

Slotting machine is quite identical to Shaper machine. The only difference lies in the cutting mechanism, ie horizontal and vertical. In slotting machine works with holding ram in vertical axis and cutting action in downwards stroke only. Rams are either crank driven or hydraulic driven. It works for small industries.

Planner Machine

Shaper Woodworking Machines

The planner machine is designed to work on the large and heavy work items. Here work piece is affixed on table and adjusted against the cutting tool. And it is workable on both horizontal and vertical mechanism.

Esskay machines is one of the renowned named who manufacturers and dealers in slotting machine, lathe machine, shapper machine, drilling machine

SHAPER MACHINE

The shaper is a machine tool used primarily for:

  • Producing a flat or plane surface which may be in a horizontal, a vertical or an angular plane.
  • Making slots, grooves and keyways.
  • Producing contour of concave/convex or a combination of these
Shaper planer and slotting machines

Working Principle :

  • The job is rigidly fixed on the machine table.
  • The single point cutting tool held properly in the tool post is mounted on a reciprocating ram.
  • The reciprocating motion of the ram is obtained by a quick return motion mechanism.
  • As the ram reciprocates, the tool cuts the material during its forward stroke.
  • During return, there is no cutting action and this stroke is called the idle stroke.
  • The forward and return strokes constitute one operating cycle of the shaper.

Basic parts of Shaper machine :

BASE : it is made of cast iron. Provides support for other parts of machine.

COLUMN: box type casting mounted vertically on top of base.

  • It has 2 guide ways. One vertical guide way in the front over which a cross slide moves up and down.
  • 2nd horizontal guide ways on top over which ram reciprocate.
  • The reciprocating mechanism is housed inside the column

CROSS RAIL: It is mounted on the front vertical guide ways.

  • The table can be lowered or raised by adjusting the cross rail

TABLE: mounted on a saddle which is located above the cross rail. Top and sides are accurately machined and have T slots.

RAM: It supports tool head on its front. It reciprocates on accurately machined guide ways on top of column

TOOL HEAD: fitted on the face of ram. Holds the tool rigidly.

  • Provide vertical and angular feeds for the tool
  • Tool head can be positioned at any angle.
And

Crank and Slotted lever mechanism:

  • A quick return mechanism is an apparatus to produce a reciprocating motion in which the time taken for travel in one direction is less than in the other.
  • It is driven by a circular motion source (typically a motor of some sort) and uses a system of links and sliding joints.
  • Driving crank AB revolves with uniform angular speed about the fixed center A.
  • A sliding block attached to the crank pin at B slides along the slotted link CE and thus causes CE to oscillate about the pivoted point C.
  • The ram which carries the tool and reciprocates in horizontal plane.

PLANNER MACHINE

A planer uses linear relative motion between the workpiece and a single-point cutting tool to cut the work piece.A planer is similar to a shaper, but larger, and with workpiece moving, whereas in a shaper the cutting tool moves.

Basic parts of Planer:

BED

  • The bed of a planer is large in size and heavy in weight.
  • It supports the column and all other moving parts of the machine.
  • It is made slightly longer than twice the length of the table so that the full length of the table may be moved on it.

TABLE

  • The table supports the work and reciprocates along the ways of the bed.
  • T-slots are provided on the entire length of the table so that the work and work holding devices may be bolted upon it.

COLUMN

  • These are rigid box-like vertical structures placed on each side of the bed.
  • It supports the cross rail.

TOOLHEAD

  • Tool heads are mounted on the cross rail by a saddle.
  • It consists of swivel base and clapper box.

Classification of Planer:

  • Double Housing Planer

Planer Shaper Combo

  • Open Side Planer: One vertical column. Cross rail is mounted on column. Single or double tool heads are used. Used for wide work piece.
  • Pit Type Planer: Work piece remain stationary. Entire unit travels horizontal. Used for Very large workpiece and where work piece movement is difficult.
  • Plate or Edge Type Planer:
    • Used for Machining edges of Heavy work piece.
    • Work piece clamped on the bed.
    • Carriage mounted on side of the workpiece.
    • Carriage supports cutting tool.
    • Carriage reciprocated along the edges.
  • Divide Table Planer:
    • It is also called tandem planer and consists of two worktables.
    • Worktable may be reciprocated together or separately.
    • The two tables can be joined together to hold large workpiece.
    • It is quite well known that, mounting and setting of workpieces on the worktable consumes more time thereby restricting the machine for continuous mass production applications.
    • In such cases, divided table planer can be used, where in, one worktable can be used for setting up a new workpiece, while the second worktable carrying workpiece is being machined.

Difference between shaper and planer machine:

SLOTTER MACHINE

Basically slotting machine is a vertical axis shaper. The tool moves vertically rather than in a horizontal direction. It has a vertical ram and a hand or power operated rotary able. The stroke of ram is smaller in slotting machines than in shapers. Used mostly for machining internal surfaces.

Classification of slotting machine:

  1. Punch slotting machine
    • Heavy duty
    • Large casting frame
    • Large stroke
  2. Production slotting machine
    • General production machine
    • Common type
    • Mechanism – Slotted disc, Connecting ram
  3. Precision Tool Room slotting machine
    • Light duty machine
    • High speed

Slotter driving mechanism:
